What is the potential health benefit?
Currently the only CBD medication that is FDA approved is Epidiolex, which was approved in 2018 for the treatment of certain types of epilepsy. “My practice has patients coming in every day asking about CBD,” says Dr. Houman Danesh, director of the pain unit at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. But even though there is a lot of evidence from users, he says, “it’s still very hard to say” what the actual benefits are because of a serious lack of clinical research.
Still, is CBD worth a try for pain management?
There are two main types of pain, says Dr. Danesh: musculoskeletal and nerve. “There could be benefits for both conditions,” he says.
Figuring out how much to take is also a challenge; the dose that relieves one patient’s pain may do very little for another person. “And until we can study it, it’s the Wild West,” Dr. Danesh says.
Bottom line: “I think it’s safe to try CBD,” says Dr. Danesh. But he urges patients to lobby political representatives to pass national bills that would allow scientists to research cannabidiol and the conditioners that respond to it.
What about anxiety, can CBD help me with that?
It’s certainly worth trying CBD to manage anxiety symptoms . “[CBD] tells your body to calm down and reminds you that you’re safe,” says Dr. Junella Chin. “It relaxes the nervous system so you don’t have a heightened ‘fight or flight’ response,” she says, so people with anxiety may find it helps them feel more relaxed.
Still, one of the most patent misconceptions about CBD is that it’s a cure-all. “A lot of times people think CBD is a panacea, and it’s not,” says Dr. Chin. “You also need to have a healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise and good nutrition; CBD won’t solve everything.”
